I am Plaid Cymru PCC candidate and I have been the PCC for the last 5 years. I and my party full support the decriminalisation of Cannabis use. In office I have brought in an offender diversionary scheme to divert low level offending away from the Criminal Justice System under current laws. We have also been pushing Welsh government on issues relating to medicinal use but progress is slow. I have prioritised drugs supply and Class A drugs in an attempt not to waste police resources in dealing with Cannabis users particularly when it’s being used for medicinal reasons. I am currently in dialogue with a constituent who will hopefully support me with a training package for officers to improve the understanding of current regulations because the response from the Home Office and the College of Policing is slow, very slow therefore officers are being let down and in turn users are being persecuted for no reason! The drug driving aspect is also overlooked and I feel more needs to be done here by way of research but that’s a longer term strategy. Anyway, I hope this highlights my personal understanding and support for a more progressive response to Cannabis in the UK and policing and PCCs can and have a duty to influence this. Best
